Back in the swing of things, the Ninja, including new members Arin, Sora, Wyldfyre, and a larger Riyu protect Ninjago City and the Crossroads from daily threats. A new Elemental Master named Cinder emerges alongside a villainous army in Wolf Masks. Lloyd's visions warn him of a Blood Moon and a dreaded future to come. Meanwhile, Ras and Jordana unlock a new threat to the Merged Lands.
Following their encounter with Cinder, the Ninja track down information on the stolen mallet. An injured Euphrasia comes to the Monastery for help, and the Ninja return with the Elemental Master of Wind to defend the Cloud Kingdom from Ras and his new Wolf Mask Army. Ras uses the Gong of Shattering to empower the Wolf Masks and Cinder, who unleashes a dark new technique to defeat the Ninja.
Reeling from defeat in the Cloud Kingdom, Lloyd reaches out to the Source Dragons and receives a vision that sets the Ninja on a journey to find a hidden, hermit Master capable of combating this new, evil form of Spinjitzu, Shatterspin. Meanwhile, Ras turns the Cloud Kingdom into his new floating base and seeks out the final component in the ritual to free the Forbidden Five.
The Ninja undergo a final test in their search to find the hermit Master capable of fighting Shatterspin only to discover their new teachers are two dragon warriors. The Dragon Masters reluctantly agree to train the Ninja. Meanwhile, Ras and the Wolf Mask army attack the Finders in the Land of Lost Things. Cole returns in time to protect Bonzle from Ras and his evil plans for the young Finder.
Lloyd, Arin, Kai, and Nya train under Egalt to learn Rising Dragon Technique while Sora and Riyu learn Spinjitzu from Rontu and an injured Wyldfyre watches from the sidelines. Cole and the Finders arrive at the Monastery and fight off the Wolf Masks with Zane’s help. They learn Bonzle’s secret origin and devise a way to protect her from Ras before he can use her to free the Forbidden Five.
Leaving the Finders behind, Cole joins Zane and Bonzle on a journey to Mysterium, the former realm of magic and Bonzle’s land of origin. They pass through many hazards only to fall into the trap of an old foe. Meanwhile, the Ninja struggle to learn the Rising Dragon Technique. Rontu sees potential in Sora and young Riyu, while Arin’s frustrations deliver a setback to his training.
Bonzle reunites with her creator, the Sorceress, in a mysterious duplicate of the Monastery of Spinjitzu. Their tearful reunion is interrupted by the arrival of Agents of the Administration, there to confiscate and decommission Zane. Meanwhile, Nya helps Kai achieve Rising Dragon Technique just as the Blood Moon rises, cutting the Ninja’s training short.
With the Dragon Masters turned to stone, Lloyd’s visions guide the Ninja to the Wyldness before their training is complete. Meanwhile, Cole and Zane fight the Administration, allowing Bonzle, Sprite and the Sorceress to escape past Agent Jay Walker – a former Ninja! They reunite in the Wyldness and sneak past Wolf Mask soldiers towards potential safety, just as the Bounty arrives – and crashes.
Ras orders the destruction of the Cloud Kingdom and prepares the Blood Moon ritual as Kai, Wyldfyre, and Sora defeat Wolf Mask soldiers and infiltrate the Shadow Dojo. Cole, Zane, and the Sorceress experiment with magic to escape the Spell Storehouse and rush to the Cloud Kingdom where they believe Bonzle was taken. Arin and Riyu cross paths with Jordana only to face a greater enemy.
Converging on the Shadow Dojo to stop Ras’s Blood Moon Ritual, Kai, Sora, and Wyldfyre rescue the sacrifices while Cole, Zane, and the Sorceress liberate the Cloud Kingdom with the help of Euphrasia. Lloyd, Nya, Riyu, and Arin, fresh off his defeat, arrive as Jordana uses Bonzle to free the first of the Forbidden Five. The Ninja unleash the Rising Dragon technique at considerable cost.
A mission in the Land of Madness to find his parents leads Arin to a gravely wounded Matriarch of the Mountain Dragons. When Riyu’s tribe mother falls to her injuries, the Ninja race her offspring back to the nest and encounter an old foe. The Ninja must solve the Matriarch’s murder and accept a new mission from the Source Dragon of Motion to determine who stole the Matriarch’s horns – and why.
The Ninja reach the gateway to the Tournament of Sources only to discover they have not been invited. To break into the City of Temples, they must ascend the plateau, scaling impossible heights and battling high-tech security forces only to find themselves at the center of opening ceremonies. Meanwhile, Kai and Bonzle evade the remaining Forbidden Five as they try to escape the Nether-Space.
After earning invitations to the Tournament of Sources, the Ninja attend a banquet for Elemental Masters with friendly faces and old enemies, and Lloyd confronts a familiar face from his vision. Later that night, he finds himself the target of an assassination attempt. Meanwhile, Arin reconnects with a friend to discover he’s inherited the Elemental Power they both once dreamed about.
The Ninja prepare for the Tournament of Sources. Arin continues his investigation into the missing horns but makes time for Frak, who Sora suspects is working for Ras. Nya’s first match pits her against Jay, still with no memory of their past. She must choose between her feelings for Jay and the Ninjas’ mission. Meanwhile, Kai and Bonzle discover a connection with Riyu outside the Nether-Space.
In her match against Cinder, Wyldfyre’s temper proves a liability in and out of the arena. In order to stay in the Tournament, the Ninja invoke an ancient rule that requires them to compete in a race outside of Temple City. Elsewhere, Riyu follows Kai’s voice and leads Arin into a confrontation with Ras.
Arin grapples with Ras’s accusation that Master Wu caused the Merge while the Ninja complete the Temple Race and win their way back into the Tournament. The next round of games finds Ras’s team keeping pace with the Ninja, as Arin confronts Sora about a secret before her match against Cinder. A restless Cole finds a familiar sight and a new mystery.
Arin follows a lead in his investigation of the missing horns to the Temple City Museum. A tour from Roby reveals a deeper connection between the Tournament and Source Dragons. The games intensify, as does Lloyd's anxiety over an inevitable fight against Zeatrix. Lloyd must prove his vision wrong or fall to her blade.
Roby and Blekt visit an injured Lloyd to complete the transfer of Zeatrix’s powers. Arin links Bleckt to a clue in his investigation and follows him back to a secret office, where Wyldfyre has an idea to uncover his plans. Lloyd arrives at his match against Nokt of the Forbidden Five only to face another hurdle, and Sora provides Arin another piece of the puzzle.
Arin learns a devastating secret about the Merge and confronts Lloyd as Cole stays behind to protect the dragon horns. Sora faces off against Nokt, and Wyldfyre is too late to stop the manipulation of the games. Nokt and Rox reveal their true intentions, to the surprise of everyone – including Ras! The Tournament ends but the real fight to stop the return of the Forbidden Five begins!
Arin, Zane, and Cole make a shocking discovery in the Monastery of Gates as they defend the Dragon Horns. The depowered Elemental Masters clash with the Wolf Mask army as Lloyd and some unlikely allies join the fight to stop Nokt from releasing the Forbidden Five. A last-minute arrival turns the tide of battle, and Arin makes a desperate attempt to learn the whereabouts of his parents.
